It’s that time of year again where Lupagus drops a quick 5 bold predictions on the Viking nation. Keep in mind each is a BOLD prediction, if it was just 5 ‘predictions’ what fun would that be?
5. Greg Jenning will play in less than 10 regular season games.
I hate to shower the Vikings big free agency signing with a shot of negativity but deep in my hair covered gut, I feel Jennings will get injured. It will cost him some games but will help the rise of Cordarrelle Patterson who has a breakout rookie season, with the added playing time.
4. Christian Ponder will throw for 3,500 yds with 26 TDs and 11 interceptions
If Ponder is ever going to prove he can be a franchise QB this is the year. He’s got Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson, a healthy Jerome Simpson, Jarius Wright, and Kyle Rudolph to throw to. He has no more excuses. If Ponder can’t reach or at least approach these numbers this year, he never will.
3. Everson Griffen will lead the team in sacks with 13.
Griffen blew up last season with 8 sacks. By years end he was arguably the most explosive pass rusher on the Vikings defensive line. Defensive coordinator Alan Williams is just getting the hang of how to use this special player, and should increase his snaps and get creative with him by lining him up anywhere on the front seven.
2. Adrian Peterson will rush for 2106 yds, setting the all time record.
Adrian Peterson is one player I’d never bet against. He ran for over 2000 yards last season with no help from the passing game. If Ponder and his new weapons can provide even a mediocre passing attack, it will open up huge holes for Adrian. Granted he could lose some carries, but it would also increase his chances for longer runs.
1. The Minnesota Vikings will win the Super Bowl.
If we are going with bold predictions, why not make the boldest one of them all? The Vikings are a solid all around team who could realistically make a deep playoff run. They have a much improved arsenal of receivers which should help their anemic passing attack. They have a much better backup QB in place in case Ponder gets hurt. Their offensive line is intact from a year ago. They have a defensive line that is chock full of guys playing in contract years. They added Desmond Bishop to their linebacking corps which is a huge upgrade. They have a playmaker at safety in Harrison Smith, and while they are young at corner, both Xavier Rhodes and Chris Cook have great size and will match-up well with any team’s no. 1 wideouts. They have the best young kicker in the game. And oh yeah they got no. 28 carrying the football.
