Falcons 2013 NFL Draft Team Needs

Atlanta Falcons Team Needs

Quick look at the Falcons top needs heading into the NFL Draft (pre-free agency).

1. Center
The Falcons obviously didn’t like what they saw at center out of Peter Konz last year and as such he struggled to see time. Trading out of the first round and getting a future pick would be great and they could use one of the extra picks to pick up a center.

2. Defensive Tackle
Babineaux is getting old and will soon be a cap issue. Signing a defensive tackle to compliment him and then take over would be wise.

3. Defensive End
The Falcons need to add some talent at DE after spending too much (and then cutting) Ray Edwards a few offseasons ago.

Konz was drafted as a center, he is a center, and he was drafted with their first pick to replace McClure immediately. You don’t draft future starters with a second round pick when you didn’t have a first round pick. And no he didn’t play very well towards the end of the season he was killed at RG when he started against the Lions and he allowed seven QB hits in his 13 games as a starter. Only three other players allowed as many over that stretch of time or less. He isn’t a lost cause, but a team with few needs can afford to try to upgrade when they can.

Are you dumb? Konz didn’t even play center last year, he played right guard, and he played pretty well towards the end of the season. Next season, he’ll most likely move to center (his natural position) and take over for the aging center Todd McClure.
